[Grades: 6-8] Students learn how too much nitrogen and phosphorus turns healthy water into algae-covered lakes. #
This interactive lesson from GBH is part of SCoPE (Solving Community Problems with Engineering). In eight short sections, students learn how nutrients help plants grow, where nutrients come from, and what happens when too many enter a lake or river. They label a diagram of pollution sources and see how individuals, businesses, and farms all contribute.
How to Use This Resource #
1. Open with the question on page 1: ‘Why are some lakes green and slimy?’
2. Have students complete the ‘Infograph It’ activity to label pollution sources.
3. Connect it locally: talk about farm runoff and waterways in the Central Valley.
